TOPEKA, KS — SparkWheel is honored to announce the receipt of a $23,250 grant from the CY25 City of Topeka Youth and Social Service Fund. This funding, facilitated through the United Way of Kaw Valley, will support the implementation of the Integrated Student Supports (ISS) model in five Topeka Public Schools: Ross Elementary, State Street Elementary, Highland Park High School, Topeka High School, and Topeka West High School.
This marks the fifth consecutive year SparkWheel has been awarded funding from the City of Topeka, reinforcing the organization’s impactful work in removing barriers to student success.
The SparkWheel ISS model is evidence-based, providing essential support to students and families to address challenges that hinder learning or regular school attendance. By customizing services for each school, SparkWheel places a dedicated Student Support Coordinator (SSC) in every building to provide targeted assistance for individual students while also ensuring schoolwide resources are available.
A Story of Hope and Resilience at State Street Elementary
One student at State Street Elementary School has experienced a remarkable transformation, thanks to the ISS model and the dedication of SparkWheel’s Student Support Coordinator.
Over the summer, the student’s family received life-changing bad news. As an only child, the student struggled with separation anxiety from her mother when attending school. Recognizing the need for additional support, the mother reached out to the SSC, who collaborated with her and the student to create a strategic plan to ease the transition.
Through consistent communication and support, the student is now thriving. She reports feeling safe and happy at school, is building strong relationships with her teacher and classmates, and no longer cries during drop-offs. Her mother shared her heartfelt gratitude, saying, “Thank you for taking care of my daughter.”
“This story is a testament to how the ISS model goes beyond academics,” said Noelle Haselhuhn, Marketing and Communications Director at SparkWheel. “It’s about creating a safe and supportive environment where students and families feel seen, valued, and empowered.”
Transforming Lives, One School at a Time
Last year alone, SparkWheel’s programs served thousands of students and provided critical resources to families across Topeka Public Schools. With this generous grant from the City of Topeka Youth and Social Service Fund, SparkWheel will continue to deliver life-changing services to students and their families, ensuring every child has the tools they need to succeed in school and beyond.
